D&G Innovation Project
The D&G Innovation Project began as a pilot creative arts ‘action research’ project serving to increase opportunities as chosen by Autism Spectrum Condition participants and to support a wider understanding of ASD issues in Dumfries and Galloway and beyond.
The Innovation Project participatory leadership methods enable young people aged 14-25 (ASD diagnosed or not) to get together and enjoy a range of arts activity sessions with the help of a team of professional artists, community development specialists, volunteer peer mentors and ASD participants' families/Carers. We use a person-centred approach and methodology which means everyone can 'self-direct' their learning activities at their pace in a safe and understanding environment.
Additionally, we encourage volunteer mentors to participate, who can gain work experience, tailor their commitment to suit their availability and ambitions and build up transferable skills. The Innovation Project offers mentors learning opportunities in peer support, social care, community arts development, cross-art form training, evaluation and monitoring skills, project administration and person-centred advocacy. The Innovation Project Volunteer Mentor positions can contribute to accredited schemes, the Curriculum for Excellence and vocational training.
The D&G Innovation Project aims to improve access to arts, social and leisure activities for those affected by ASD while increasing confidence, communication and developing other transferable skills with a focus on the individual needs and ambitions of the participants.
The Innovation Project pilot timeline was from June 2016 to March 2017. Since then the project has gone from strength to strength, now providing a regular Saturday Art Club and piloting a Creative Writing Workshop programme.

The pilot phase was delivered in partnership with D&G Council Autism Initiative Officer, Better Lives Partnership, Sleeping Giants and other 3rd sector organisations. It was funded by the Scottish Government's 'Autism Development and Innovation Fund' and then by Creative Scotland's 'Cashback for Creativity' fund.

aethAERIALarts advocate for youth arts provision
aethAERIALarts are advocates for the arts! Cate Ross made a short presentation about the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Partnership 'Youth Arts Learning Journeys' at a recent conference for the Fresh Start for the Arts initiative in Dumfries and Galloway. She spoke about the peer-led methods used and why they are so useful for arts education and community development. Cate also got to show some of the brilliant self-made film work of Alasdair Hulatt to illustrate what stunt unicycle means to one young artist... Look here for Alasdair's own films.
Dark Wood performance enchants its audiences
Aerie Circus Loonytricksters were ready for the Giants in the Forest 'Dark Wood' performances in Dumfries and Galloway. After 8 hours of workshop time we did seven shows in three hours to an audience totalling 90 people. There was a wonderful blend of laughter, devised physical theatre, fabric installation, costume art and new skills shared. The Vision Mechanics light and giant puppet installation inspired us in our expedition to discover the secrets of the Giants in their woodland habitat and all their entourage. Here you see members of Kirkcudbright Academy's drama department ready to go, Alasdair Hulatt as The Gatekeeper and David Giblin playing the Giant Tender ... brilliant skills shared by all the artists, project developers and players.

Chloe's Youth Arts Learning Journey
Chloe Briggs flying along on her Youth Arts Learning Journey with aethAERIALarts. After being awarded a small budget from the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Partnership project Fresh Start for the Arts to facilitate creative developments Chloe has been to watch NoFit State Circus perform their spectacular aerial show at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She commented that it was 'amazing' and her favourite part was the last dance by Sage Cushman on single point dance trapeze. Having been in training on single point trapeze with aethAERIALarts over the summer Chloe could relate to the strength and dynamism of Sage's performance! It was exciting to see a professional international performer using moves in her choreography that Chloe has achieved herself.
Recently Chloe has had a series of introductory classes from Haylee-Mai Edwards in Aerial Silks (sometimes called fabrics or tissu). Haylee-Mai is an international aerial artist who recently moved to the Stewartry area of Dumfries and Galloway. Would you believe our luck?! World class teaching and performance skills at the door...

Alasdair's bounding along on his Youth Arts Learning Journey
Jumping off into a career as a stunt bike specialist Alasdair Hulatt shows off some tricks in his home town. After his award of a small budget from the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Partnership project Fresh Start for the Arts Alasdair has had a successful time teaching and performing tricks at Belladrum Festival with aethAERIALarts in the Highland Region of Scotland. Alasdair is all set to create his own workshop programme 'Keeping it Wheel' (working title!) where he wants to support skill development for other young people who are practicing Skate, Scooter, Bike and Unicycle stunts. After a brilliant time working with NoFit State Youth Circus for a week in Cardiff Alasdair has experience of best practice up his sleeve to help make his teaching fun and relevant to other's creative development. Plans are afoot to combine with aethAERIALarts to create an Acrobalance workshop to continue bringing circus arts to people in Dumfries and Galloway. Alasdair is also lined up to help produce aethAERIALarts' performance project 'Dark Wood' to be staged in October- for more information on this see below...
